Stay Overview

Karpaha Sands is a luxury glamping resort on Sri Lanka's east coast, and the only property on Kalkudah Beach. The resort consists of seventeen private luxury tented suites set on a former palm plantation beside 15 kilometres of pristine beach with fine sand and turquoise waters safe for swimming. Three suite types are available: Palam Suites, Kolaya Suites and Seed Suites. Each features an intimate garden, individual terrace and outdoor rubble stone shower. Art is integrated throughout the property: sculptures, paintings and photography by emerging Sri Lankan and international artists. The east coast operates on opposite seasons to the south coast, making Karpaha Sands an excellent choice for June to September travel. The resort holds TripAdvisor Traveller's Choice Best of the Best recognition.

What Makes Karpaha Sands Different

The isolation is real. The east coast was unreachable for 30 years during the civil war and is only now properly open to travellers. There are no other resorts on Kalkudah Beach. Just seventeen suites on 15 kilometres of sand. The early morning ritual of local Tamil fishermen hauling nets by hand is unchanged for centuries and visible every morning from the beach. The property is built on a former palm plantation, so the trees, the light and the silence all feel authentic to place. Art is integrated throughout rather than applied for effect. The commitment to sustainability and community employment is genuinely operational, not just marketing language.

What to Expect

Seventeen private luxury tented suites on Kalkudah Beach. Pristine 15-kilometre beach with fine sand and calm turquoise waters. Local Tamil fishermen hauling nets every morning, a ritual unchanged for centuries. Restaurant serving fresh seafood sourced directly from local fishermen. Spa and Ayurvedic treatments in private pavilions. Swimming and snorkelling. Sunrise walks on near-empty beach. Low environmental footprint throughout all operations.

Experiences Not to Miss

Sunrise over the Gulf of Bengal from the beach at dawn. Walking 15 kilometres of beach with almost no other people. Watching the morning fishing ritual as nets are hauled in by hand. A massage in a private spa pavilion. Fresh seafood caught that morning and prepared for dinner. Swimming in calm, shallow turquoise water. The sky at sunset over the Indian Ocean as the light turns the beach pink.

When to Go and How to Combine It

June to September when the east coast is at its best. This is the southwest monsoon window, which makes the south coast wet and the east coast ideal. July and August are peak. The resort is 1 hour from Polonnaruwa, one of Sri Lanka's most significant ancient capitals. It works well as a beach stop between cultural triangle visits and the central mountains or national parks.

FAQ

Why visit the east coast instead of the south coast?

The east and south coast operate on opposite monsoon cycles. The south coast is best from November to April. The east coast is at its finest from June to September. If your travel window falls outside November to April, the east coast offers settled weather, genuine quiet and beaches with almost no other tourists.

How far is Karpaha Sands from Polonnaruwa?

Polonnaruwa is approximately 1 hour by car. The resort works well as a beach stop combined with a visit to the ancient city, which is one of Sri Lanka's most impressive archaeological sites.

What are the three suite types?

Palam Suites, Kolaya Suites and Seed Suites. Each is a private luxury tented suite with its own garden, terrace and outdoor shower. They vary in size and position within the property. Contact the resort directly to confirm which suits your preference.

Is the beach safe for swimming?

Yes. Kalkudah Beach has calm, shallow turquoise water and is considered one of Sri Lanka's safest swimming beaches. The bay is protected and the waters are consistently gentle.

Is the resort suitable for families?

Yes. The calm beach, shallow water and spacious suites work well for families. The team arranges meals for children and the natural setting engages all ages.

Are activities available beyond the beach?

Yes. The resort arranges snorkelling, diving, local village tours, wildlife spotting, cultural experiences and visits to nearby ancient sites and tea estates. Most guests balance beach time with at least one or two excursions.
