Malabar Hill is a contemporary boutique resort built by Dominic Scriven and Lawson Johnston, developers who already owned Mango Bay Phu Quoc in Vietnam. Built on a former cinnamon plantation above Weligama Bay, Malabar Hill features fourteen private jungle pool villas set across solar-powered grounds with 270-degree views from forest to ocean. No cars are allowed anywhere on the property. Two restaurants serve regional Rajasthani and Sri Lankan cuisine. Swimming pool. Spa with world-class treatments. The design draws from Moorish architectural details to create an evocative safari encampment at the forest edge, plastic-free since opening and recognized by British Vogue as one of the Top 30 Best New Hotels in the World (2022).
This property was built with a very clear point of view: luxury without compromise, but designed in conversation with the landscape rather than imposed on it. Every element signals intentionality. No plastic. No cars. No noise. The fourteen villas sit far enough apart that the rest of the property disappears when you are on your terrace. The bar is positioned at the forest edge with a 10-metre length and 270-degree views from jungle to ocean. Solar power runs everything. The cinnamon plantation heritage is preserved through the architecture and planting. Most boutique resorts claim character. Malabar Hill has built it into every decision from the ground up.
A contemporary resort carved into forest above Weligama Bay. Fourteen private jungle pool villas with outdoor plunge pools and terraces. Two restaurants: The Hill House (Sri Lankan and world cuisine) and The Bar (drinks with views). Wellness spa. Walking trails through the plantation. No cars on the property. A commitment to sustainability visible in every detail.
A floating breakfast on your private terrace overlooking the jungle and ocean. The 10-metre bar at sunset with the bay below you. Spa treatments using essential oils and traditional techniques. A walk through the former cinnamon plantation with a naturalist guide. Dinner at The Hill House using the freshest local produce. Photography during the golden hour when light moves through the forest canopy.
November to April for the south coast. Malabar Hill works as a base for exploring Weligama's beaches, surf breaks and fishing villages. It connects easily to Galle Fort to the west (45 minutes) and the wildlife safaris at Yala to the east (2 hours). A typical routing is 2-3 nights here, then onwards to the hill country or the east coast.
