What does the $100 per night SDF cover?

The Sustainable Development Fee is a mandatory government levy of USD 100 per person per night (for international tourists). It funds education, healthcare, environmental conservation and cultural preservation across Bhutan. It is separate from hotel and guide costs.

Do I need a guide for this itinerary?

Day 1-2

Paro

Arrive into Paro International Airport — one of the world's most dramatic approaches, descending through steep Himalayan valleys. Afternoon visit to Rinpung Dzong and a walk along the river below the fortress. Day 2: Hike to Tiger's Nest Monastery (Taktsang Lhakhang). The trail climbs 900 metres through pine forest above the Paro Valley floor, passing a waterfall viewpoint midway. Arrive at the monastery itself at 3,120 metres. Return before midday. Afternoon visit to 7th-century Kyichu Lhakhang.

Day 3

Dochu La Pass — Punakha

Drive east from Paro through Thimphu and over the Dochu La pass at 3,050 metres. The pass is marked by 108 memorial chortens built by the Royal Queens of Bhutan; on clear mornings the high Himalayan peaks are visible to the north. Descend to the warm Punakha Valley — noticeably lower and greener than Paro. Check in and walk the valley at dusk.

Day 4

Punakha

Morning visit to Punakha Dzong — walk across the old wooden cantilever bridge to reach the dzong at the confluence of the Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu rivers. Built in 1637 and the most beautiful fortress monastery in Bhutan. Afternoon visit to Chimi Lhakhang, the fertility temple of Lama Drukpa Kunley, reached across rice paddies from the road.

Day 5

Paro — Departure

Return drive to Paro via Thimphu with time for the weekend market (Saturdays and Sundays), the Folk Heritage Museum, or a final walk along the Thimphu river. Evening departure from Paro International Airport.
