Amet Haveli is a nearly 300-year-old haveli on the banks of Lake Pichola in Udaipur's old city quarter, with 22 lake-facing rooms and the Ambrai restaurant set directly on the water's edge. Built between 1734 and 1752 during the reign of Maharana Jagat Singh II — the same ruler who commissioned the Lake Palace — the haveli's Badi Mahal garden was designed by the same architect as the Udaipur Lake Palace. It remains in the hands of the Amet family and is one of only three properties in Udaipur with a Badi Mahal. The Ambrai restaurant is widely regarded as the finest lakeside dining in Udaipur, looking directly at the Lake Palace and City Palace across the water.
Udaipur has many heritage hotels with lake views. Amet Haveli has something different: it is built on the lake, not above it. Guests in lake-facing rooms watch the water from a few metres away. The Ambrai restaurant is not a hotel dining room with a view — it is essentially a garden table set at the lake's edge, with the Lake Palace floating in front of you and the City Palace behind it. Audley Travel, one of the leading UK luxury operators, recommends it as their preferred Udaipur property for this reason. LocalHi places it in Rajasthan journeys for clients who want Udaipur's full romance at a human scale — not the impersonal grandeur of a 200-room palace hotel.
22 rooms: 8 heritage suites, 8 super deluxe rooms, 6 heritage deluxe rooms. All lake-facing. Rooms vary in size and character; the heritage suites retain original Rajput-era artistry — traditional silks, antique furnishing, stained glass. The property has its own boat, the Garuda, for private lake rides. Swimming pool in the gardens. Direct walking access to Jagdish Temple (600 metres) and the City Palace (1.3 km).
Dinner at Ambrai — book ahead, especially in peak season. Sunrise from a lake-facing suite balcony when the Lake Palace is lit in the early light. The Garuda boat ride at dusk, timed to watch the City Palace illuminate. Ask the reception about the Badi Mahal — it is not prominently signposted but it is a remarkable private garden with its own history.
October to March. Udaipur is manageable year-round but peak season (November to February) is most comfortable. LocalHi pairs Amet Haveli with RAAS Devigarh (28 km away) for a Udaipur experience that captures both the lakeside soul of the old city and the hilltop grandeur of the Aravalli Heritage. For a classic Rajasthan circuit, it sits between Rawla Narlai (driving from Jodhpur) and Jaipur.
