Bera Safari Lodge is a luxury tented camp at Jawai Bandh in Pali district, western Rajasthan, in the only landscape in India where leopards have coexisted with farming communities for generations in open granite hill country — no national park, no forest department permit required, no tourist traffic management. Jawai Bandh is also one of Rajasthan's largest reservoirs and a significant wintering ground for flamingos, crocodiles, and migratory waterbirds. The combination of reliably viewable leopards, open landscape photography, and lakeside bird watching makes it arguably the most versatile wildlife destination in Rajasthan outside Ranthambore.
The leopard sightings at Jawai are different from any other leopard destination in India. The cats move openly across granite outcrops, often visible at distance on rock faces without any of the dense forest obstruction that makes sightings at most Indian reserves a matter of fleeting glimpses. The Rabari tribal community that has coexisted with the leopards here has a relationship with the cats that is genuinely documented — there are no recent records of human-leopard conflict, which is remarkable. The lodge's guides are local Rabari men with generational knowledge of the landscape. A walk with one of them has nothing in common with a standard safari briefing.
Luxury tented accommodation with ensuite bathrooms, facing the Jawai granite hills. Morning and evening leopard drives. Crocodile and bird watching at the lake. Cultural engagement with the Rabari community. The lodge has a RARE India award — Best RARE Hotel 2025.
Evening leopard drive at the granite outcrops — the best light for photography is in the last 90 minutes before dark. Flamingo sighting at the reservoir (November to February). Walk with a Rabari guide to a traditional encampment. Sunrise drive when the granite turns pink and the cats move before the heat begins.
October to March for leopards and migratory birds. November to February for flamingos. LocalHi pairs Jawai/Bera with Rawla Narlai (40 km) for a Pali district wildlife circuit. Both properties can be visited in three nights: two nights at Bera, one night at Rawla Narlai, with the stepwell dinner as the cultural counterpoint to the wildlife focus.
Where is Jawai Bandh?
Jawai Bandh is in Pali district, western Rajasthan, approximately 160 km from Udaipur and 100 km from Jodhpur.
Is Jawai better than Ranthambore for leopards?
They offer different experiences. Ranthambore is for tigers, with high vehicle traffic and a forest setting. Jawai is for leopards, in open granite hill country with almost no tourist infrastructure. LocalHi includes both in itineraries for different reasons.
What is the best time to visit Bera Safari Lodge?
October to March. Leopards are visible year-round but the migratory birds (including flamingos) and the best light for photography are in the winter months.
