Lakshman Sagar is a 12-cottage retreat on the banks of a 19th-century man-made hunting lake in Raipur village, Pali district, approximately 60 km from Jodhpur. The lake was originally built as a hunting ground for the local zamindars. The 12 sustainably designed cottages are dotted around the lake on raised platforms, separated enough to give each complete privacy. It is managed by Brij Hotels, the same family group behind Brijrama Palace Varanasi. The setting is pure countryside Rajasthan — no fort, no palace, no monument.
The draw here is the lake and what it enables: wild swimming at dawn, kayaking in the early morning mist, watching painted storks and kingfishers from a private deck. Lakshman Sagar is not about heritage architecture or royal lineage — it is about rural Rajasthan and water, which is a rarity in the state. The cottages are designed to have as small a visual footprint as possible — stone, thatch, organic materials. Each has a private outdoor area directly facing the water. The complete absence of noise, traffic, and other guests visible from your cottage is genuinely unusual in India at any price point.
12 cottages in three categories — Kothi, Mahal, and Bungalow. All have private outdoor areas facing the lake. Pool. The dining setup is communal in the evenings and can be moved outdoors to the lakeside. Farm-to-table cooking using local produce. No TVs in rooms.
Kayaking or boating on the lake at sunrise. Village walks to Raipur and nearby settlements. Birding at the lake — painted storks, egrets, kingfishers, bee-eaters. Sundowner drinks on the private deck. A half-day to Rawla Narlai (40 km) or Jodhpur (60 km) for those who want a heritage combination.
October to March. LocalHi pairs Lakshman Sagar with Rawla Narlai and Mihir Garh for a Pali district deep-dive — three properties that together cover the water, the leopard country, and the desert in a 90-km radius. A genuinely original Rajasthan itinerary that almost no foreign operator currently runs.
