Mihir Garh, Jodhpur District

Mihir Garh is a purpose-built fort in the Thar Desert, 60 km south of Jodhpur, with nine suites on a seven-storey tower rising from the sand. It was conceived and built by the Singh Deo family of House of Rohet in 2009. Each suite is designed around a different Rajput cultural theme — miniature painting, mirror work, hand-blocked textiles — and executed by traditional craftspeople rather than interior designers. It was not restored. It was conceived and built from scratch as a fortress — which means the architecture has a purposefulness that converted palaces often lack. Every detail was commissioned for the building rather than inherited from it.
