Stay Overview

Mihir Garh is a purpose-built fort in the Thar Desert, 60 km south of Jodhpur, with nine suites on a seven-storey tower rising from the sand. It was conceived and built by the Singh Deo family of House of Rohet in 2009. Each suite is designed around a different Rajput cultural theme — miniature painting, mirror work, hand-blocked textiles — and executed by traditional craftspeople rather than interior designers. Lonely Planet named it the world's most extraordinary hotel. It has no pool visible from ground level; its rooftop infinity pool overlooks an unbroken expanse of desert.

What Makes Mihir Garh Different

It was not restored. It was conceived and built from scratch as a fortress — which means the architecture has a purposefulness that converted palaces often lack. Every detail was commissioned for the building rather than inherited from it. The equestrian programme is the finest in Rajasthan: multi-day Marwari horse rides through the desert, with support camp, are arranged for guests who want more than a morning trot. The food is exceptional — a full kitchen producing Marwari cuisine at a level LocalHi has not encountered elsewhere in Rajasthan. At nine suites, it can be bought out entirely for a private group, which LocalHi arranges for families and small private parties.

What to Expect

Nine suites across seven floors, each with a private terrace or balcony facing the desert. Rooftop pool. No television in rooms by design. The dining room is candlelit and communal by default, though private dining can be arranged. No mobile signal in most of the property — which is either a flaw or the point, depending on the guest.

Experiences Not to Miss

A full-day desert ride on Marwari horses with the House of Rohet team. Sunset from the rooftop tower. A private dinner in the desert arranged by the kitchen team. Visit to the village of Rohet (35 km, the ancestral estate) to see the horse stables.

When to Go and How to Combine It

Mid-October to mid-March. Mihir Garh is at its best in the winter months when the desert air is clear and cold at night. LocalHi pairs it with Rohet Garh (for the village contrast), Kaner Retreat (continuing west toward Jaisalmer), and RAAS Jodhpur (for the city end of the journey). A five-night private western Rajasthan journey anchored at Mihir Garh, Rohet Garh, and Kaner Retreat is one of LocalHi's most refined India circuits.
