Stay Overview

Kaner Retreat is a 10-villa desert botanical resort set on seven acres of the Thar Desert, approximately 80 km from Jodhpur on the Jodhpur–Jaisalmer highway. Each villa is named after and designed around a native desert flower — the Kaner (desert rose), Dhatura, Aak, and others — with commissioned botanical artwork, reclaimed wood, and private courtyards. It was founded by journalist-turned-botanist Sapna Bhatia and is the only Indian property featured in both Desert Escapes (Lannoo Publishers, Belgium) and Desert by Design (Abrams, US).

What Makes Kaner Retreat Different

Most Rajasthan stops are about monuments. Kaner is about the desert itself — its plant life, its food ecology, its silence. Sapna leads every botanical walk personally, taking guests through a sacred grove (an oran in Marwari) explaining traditional uses of desert plants, famine foods, and the Marwari cultural relationship with the landscape. The property produces its own olive oil from a desert olive grove — an agricultural oddity in the Thar. Dinner is served wherever the day has taken you: on the dunes, in the pottery gallery after the clay workshop, or under the stars after a village visit. There is no bar in the conventional sense; drinks are served as you dine. LocalHi builds Kaner into Rajasthan journeys as the deliberate midpoint between Jodhpur and Jaisalmer — the place where the circuit slows down.

What to Expect

Ten standalone villas, each sleeping two. Private courtyards. The Glasshouse Lounge for breakfast. Pool. No room numbers — just flower names on your door. Rates include breakfast; other meals are structured around experiences rather than a restaurant menu. Staff are recruited from local communities. The property is entirely plastic-free and grows much of its produce on site.

Experiences Not to Miss

The Kaner Clay Experience pairs a pottery workshop with a seven-course meal designed around the ceramic forms you've just handled. The Dune Dinner is exactly what it sounds like — a private set-up on the sand, timed to the stars. From November to February, Sapna arranges a visit to Khichan village where thousands of demoiselle cranes migrate from Central Asia — one of the most extraordinary wildlife gatherings in India, known to almost no one outside Rajasthan.

When to Go and How to Combine It

October to March is ideal. Kaner sits exactly midway between Jodhpur and Jaisalmer, making it a natural two-night stop on any western Rajasthan circuit. LocalHi pairs it with Rohet Garh (Jodhpur end) and Mihir Garh (desert approach) for a journey that moves from equestrian heritage to botanical wilderness to desert fortress in five days.
