Amankora Bumthang is set in the Chokhor Valley, widely regarded as Bhutan’s spiritual heartland, adjacent to the historic Wandichholing Palace. The lodge comprises 16 suites arranged around a central courtyard, built in traditional Bhutanese style using rammed-earth walls and timber, paired with Aman's minimalist interiors. Bumthang is one of Bhutan’s most culturally significant regions, home to some of the country’s oldest monasteries and religious sites, and is typically reached via a domestic flight from Paro or a long overland journey from central Bhutan.
Unlike the more accessible western valleys, Bumthang offers a deeper, more immersive experience of Bhutanese culture and religion. The lodge’s location places it within close reach of ancient monasteries, pilgrimage routes and seasonal festivals, making it the most culturally focused of the Amankora properties. The pace here is slower and more introspective, shaped by the valley’s spiritual significance rather than its landscape alone.
16 suites arranged across a courtyard-style property, each featuring a bedroom and living space with a bukhari (wood-burning stove) and terrazzo bath. A central lodge houses dining and lounge areas, while a spa offers treatments along with steam and sauna facilities. Dining is all-inclusive, with Bhutanese, Indian and Western menus. Compared to other lodges, the experience here is less about facilities and more about proximity to Bhutan’s cultural and religious core.
Visits to Jambay Lhakhang and Kurjey Lhakhang, two of Bhutan’s oldest and most important temples. Exploration of Jakar Dzong overlooking the valley. Participation in local tshechu festivals (seasonal). Guided walks through Bumthang’s villages, monasteries and pilgrimage routes.
March to May and September to November offer the best conditions for travel, with festival periods adding additional cultural depth. Amankora Bumthang is typically included in longer Bhutan itineraries, combined with Gangtey, Punakha, Thimphu and Paro. Access is via domestic flight or extended overland routing through central Bhutan.
