Amankora Gangtey is the most remote of the five Amankora lodges, set on a forested knoll above the Phobjikha Valley in central Bhutan. The lodge comprises just 8 suites, positioned to overlook one of Bhutan’s most pristine glacial valleys — a designated conservation area and the winter habitat of the endangered black-necked crane. Built in traditional Bhutanese style with rammed-earth walls and timber, the property maintains Aman's minimalist aesthetic while placing full emphasis on the surrounding landscape. It is typically reached via a 6–7 hour drive from Punakha or Thimphu.
Amankora Gangtey stands apart for its setting — a wide, untouched valley with no major urban development, offering a sense of stillness that is increasingly rare. Unlike the other lodges, the experience here is less about cultural landmarks and more about landscape, wildlife and pace. Its position overlooking the valley provides uninterrupted views across wetlands and forests, particularly striking during the winter crane migration season.
8 suites arranged across a quiet hillside, each with a combined bedroom and living area, bukhari (wood-burning stove) and large windows oriented toward the valley. A small spa with treatment rooms, steam and sauna. Dining is all-inclusive, served in a central lodge building or privately. Facilities are intentionally limited compared to other Amankora properties, with the focus placed on space, silence and the natural surroundings.
Seasonal viewing of black-necked cranes between October and February. Guided walks through the Phobjikha Valley, including visits to Gangtey Monastery overlooking the valley floor. Nature trails, birdwatching and village walks through one of Bhutan’s most traditional regions. Photography during early morning and late afternoon light when the valley is at its most atmospheric.
October to February is ideal for crane season, while March to May and September to November offer clearer weather for valley exploration. Amankora Gangtey is typically combined with Punakha and Thimphu as part of a longer Bhutan itinerary, and can be extended onward to Bumthang for deeper central Bhutan journeys.
