Stay Overview

Amankora Punakha is set on a forested hillside above the Mo Chhu river in the Punakha Valley, Bhutan’s warmest and most fertile region. The lodge occupies a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse site that has been carefully restored and expanded into a 12-suite property, maintaining the architectural language of rammed-earth walls, courtyards and timber structures. Surrounded by paddy fields and river valleys, it offers a markedly softer, greener landscape compared to Paro and Thimphu, and is typically reached via a 4–5 hour drive from Thimphu across the Dochula Pass.

What Makes Amankora Punakha Different

Unlike the forested settings of Paro and Thimphu, Amankora Punakha is defined by open valley views and agricultural landscapes. The lodge sits above one of Bhutan’s two major rivers, with a slower, warmer atmosphere shaped by Punakha’s subtropical climate. Its location places it close to some of Bhutan’s most important cultural landmarks, including Punakha Dzong, while also allowing access to river-based and valley experiences that are not possible elsewhere in the country.

What to Expect

12 suites arranged around a traditional courtyard layout, each featuring a bedroom and living space with a bukhari (wood-burning stove) and terrazzo bath. A central lodge building houses dining and lounge areas, while an infinity pool overlooks the valley and river below. A spa offers treatments alongside steam and sauna facilities. Dining remains all-inclusive, with menus spanning Bhutanese, Indian and Western cuisine. The overall experience is quieter and more expansive, with a stronger connection to the surrounding landscape.

Experiences Not to Miss

A guided visit to Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most significant architectural and religious sites, located at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. Walks through paddy fields and suspension bridges across the valley. River rafting on the Mo Chhu (seasonal). A visit to Chimi Lhakhang, the fertility temple located a short drive from the lodge.

When to Go and How to Combine It

October to April offers the most pleasant climate, with warmer temperatures than the higher-altitude valleys. Amankora Punakha is typically combined with Thimphu and Paro as part of the western Bhutan circuit, and extended onward to Gangtey or Bumthang for longer journeys. The drive from Thimphu crosses the Dochula Pass, one of Bhutan’s most scenic routes.
