Stay Overview

Phobjikha Valley is a glacial valley at 3,000 metres and the winter home of endangered black-necked cranes that migrate from the Tibetan plateau each November. The valley is one of Bhutan's most beautiful landscapes — wide, treeless, dotted with farmhouses, and ringed by forested hills — and is considered sacred by locals who believe the cranes are reincarnations of monks. If you are searching for Phobjikha Valley Bhutan 2026, black-necked cranes Bhutan, Gangtey Valley, or Phobjikha crane festival, this guide covers the best time to visit, the Gangtey Nature Trail, and what the valley looks like when the cranes return.

Overview

The cranes arrive in early November and stay until late March. The peak population is around 600 birds, and they roost in the valley's wetlands, feeding on leftover potato crops in the fields. The cranes are tall, elegant, and unmistakable — white bodies, black necks, red crowns — and their bugling calls echo across the valley at dawn and dusk.  The Black-Necked Crane Festival is held on November 11 each year at Gangtey Monastery. The festival includes mask dances, folk songs, and school performances focused on crane conservation. It is a local event, not a tourist spectacle, and the primary audience is valley residents and schoolchildren.  The Gangtey Nature Trail is a 3-hour walk through the valley floor, starting from Gangtey Monastery and ending at Khewa Lhakhang temple. The trail passes through marshland, pine forest, and open farmland. In winter, the trail offers close views of the cranes without disturbing them. The walk is flat and easy.  Gangtey Monastery (Gangtey Goemba) overlooks the valley from a ridge and is the largest Nyingma monastery in Bhutan. The monastery is 400 years old, currently under renovation, and still houses a community of monks. The view from the monastery courtyard — looking down across the valley to the crane roosting sites — is exceptional.

What Most People Get Wrong

Visiting outside crane season. The valley is beautiful year-round, but the cranes are the reason most people come. Plan your visit between mid-November and late February for guaranteed sightings.  The second mistake is skipping the nature trail. Most itineraries allow one hour for Gangtey Monastery and then drive onward. The valley rewards slow movement, and the trail is the best way to see the cranes at ground level.

Who This Is For

Birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts. Photographers. Travelers who prefer quiet valleys over city temples. Anyone visiting Bhutan in winter.

Who Should Skip

Travelers who do not visit Bhutan between November and March. The valley is still worth visiting outside crane season, but the primary draw is absent.

LocalHi Tip

Stay overnight at Dewachen Hotel or Gangtey Lodge for sunrise over the valley when the cranes leave their roosts and the frost is still on the ground. The drive from Punakha is three hours, and day-tripping means you miss the morning light.
