Phuket Town's old quarter was built by Peranakan Chinese — traders who settled during the 19th century tin mining boom and created a hybrid culture found nowhere else in Thailand. Shophouses painted in pastels since the 1920s. Charcoal-filtered coffee unchanged for 150 years. Shrines that tourists photograph for aesthetics and families visit to make offerings. A two-hour walk with a guide from one of those families covers the Shrine of the Serene Light, the On On Hotel (built 1929, Phuket's oldest), and the street food alley behind Dibuk Road. The cooking class after it runs from a restored shophouse kitchen — four dishes, including a southern Thai curry you will not find in any Bangkok restaurant or Indian Thai restaurant. Vegetarian version available, fully planned in advance. Done by 1pm. Beach in the afternoon.
